The new Mary Poppins Returns images show the joyful side of the character
As we already know, there will be a sequel to the beloved 1964 film Mary Poppins next year. Coming to theaters on Christmas 2018 is Mary Poppins Returns. The Rob Marshall directed, American-Britsh musical fantasy comedy film that will have Emily Blunt in the titular role, (that of the nanny Mary Poppins) and Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Meryl Streep, Colin Firth in the rest of the cast.
As the title suggests (Mary Poppins Returns), the famous nanny is coming into the lives of the Banks children once again, but this time they are all grown up. Her return is amidst a tragedy, and the beloved Miss Poppins must work her magic to bring some joy to the new generation.
David Magee took care of the script from the acclaimed P.L. Travers novel Mary Poppins, and Dion Beebe of the cinematography of the latest film adaptation.
The official synopsis for Walt Disney Pictures production of Mary Poppins Returns:
“Mary Poppins Returns” is set in 1930s depression-era London (the time period of the original novels) and is drawn from the wealth of material in PL Travers’ additional seven books. In the story, Michael (Whishaw) and Jane (Mortimer) are now grown up, with Michael, his three children and their housekeeper, Ellen (Walters), living on Cherry Tree Lane. After Michael suffers a personal loss, the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins (Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Miranda), uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Mary Poppins also introduces the children to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Streep).
Mary Poppins Returns opens on December 25, 2018, and these are the new images released thanks to EW and Walt Disney Pictures.
