I Don’t Get It Either Glenn

For more than two decades I’ve been baffled by one particular Oscar win. Dare I say it undeserving, but I’m not the only one that dares to say it. Glenn Close shares my opinion, and she’s finally speaking about it. It’s a long-overdue remark, but still accurate if you ask me.

And yes, I’m talking about Glenn’s most recent remarks about the 1999 win in the Best leading actress category. Indeed, I’m talking about Gwyneth Paltrow. And before she became a holistic goddess, cookbook author, a health guru and before she launched her insufferable GOOP brand… she was a good actress. Dare I even say, respectable actress. With a little help from her famous parents, A-list friends and Harvey Weinstein, but still. She was once a good actress.

And she even starred in one of my favorite movies. Flesh and Bone, Seven, Hard Eight, Great Expectations and probably my all-time favorite The Royal Tenenbaums. Oh, and Contagion. Let’s not forget the OG pandemic movie that I keep watching over and over in this horrible year. An year that just won’t end.

However, Shakespeare in Love is not on my list of favorite movies. Why? Because it’s not that good of a movie anyway. Furthermore, it’s not on my list of favorite Gwyneth performances either. Which is why I agree with Glenn on this. How on earth did she win an Oscar? It really doesn’t make any sense.

“I honestly feel that to be nominated by your peers is about as good as it gets,” Close said. “And then, I’ve never understood how you could honestly compare performances, you know? I remember the year Gwyneth Paltrow won over that incredible actress who was in ‘Central Station’ and I thought, ‘What?’ It doesn’t make sense.” Added Glenn, and I have to agree.

And I know everyone is raving about the Cate Blanchett snub, and of course the aforementioned Fernanda Montenegro (the actress from Central Station that Glenn is referring to). But, frankly, I was all about Emily Watson that night. She was incredible in Hillary and Jackie and deserved to win a hell of a lot more than anyone else. Especially Gwyneth.

But it’s not the first undeserving Oscar win in history, and certainly won’t be the last. Personally, I was also baffled by Roberto Benigni’s win in the best actor in a leading role category. And frankly, I didn’t get all the rave about Moonlight a few years back. But I digress.

But I’m glad Glenn is speaking up even after all these years. I suppose she’s at that point in her career when she can say things like this and get away with it. She’s an acclaimed actress, a true auteur and at the grand old age of 73 (and with 7 Oscar nominations), she can say whatever she wants. Look, I know it’s a matter of personal opinion. And I know that the hate for Gwyneth is not solely aimed at the state of her current career, but this has been bugging me since the late ’90s.

Yeah, everyone remembers the crying, the ill-fitting pink dress she wore and the terrible accepting speech that night. But, the first thing that comes to mind when (it’s not just me I promise) when you mention this win, is…. Ugh… That was a wrong move from the Academy. I mean just take a look at the comment section in the Oscar speech video bellow. So, yeah. Don’t fault Glenn for stating the obvious. Gwyneth didn’t deserve that Oscar, but I suppose the Weinstein’s campaign was stronger. And yes. There’s no justice in this world. If there was, Glenn would have that award by now.
