Blast from the past

Favorite Aretha Franklin Appearance

Yeserday was a sad sad day for the music industry. The Queen of soul, Aretha Franklin passed away after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 76 years old.

During her long and sometimes tumulus music career Aretha won 18 Grammy Awards, including the first eight awards given for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, from 1968 through to 1975, and is one of the bestselling musical artists of all time, having sold more than 75 million records worldwide. Franklin received numerous honors throughout her career, including a 1987 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, becoming the first female performer to be inducted.

She served as an inspiration for many young artists, and also is considered a trailblazing icon for many artists to come.
But for now, let me honor her legacy with one of my favorite performances. Yes, I’m talking about her role in The Blues Brothers.

And yes… Aretha’s last movie appearance was in 2013’s documentary Muscle Shoals, but her best appearance was in 1980’s Blues Brothers.
She did a flawless rendition of her hit Think, and I must admit the first time I was the movie, I actually had a tough time recognizing her. A few seconds later (after she started singing) I did managed to recognize Aretha, but yeah, she was phenomenal as Mrs. Murphy even in that old diner uniform.

She reprised her role 18 years later, in the sequel called Blues Brothers 2000, but the John Landis original movie remains my favorite to this day.

RIP Aretha… You’ll be missed.
