Joaquin Phoenix is a paraplegic artist in Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot
Joaquin Phoenix and Roony Mara present He Won’t Get Far On Foot- their third collaboration on screen, and they are both headed to Sundance Film Festival with the Gus van Sant directed biopic.
Phoenix is John Callahan in Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot. A man who became paralyzed after a car accident at age 21, and turned to drawing as a form of therapy. The movie follows Callahan during his support group sessions, and his eventual recovery from alcohol addiction. Jonah Hill, Rooney Mara, Jack Black, Carrie Brownstein, Beth Ditto and Kim Gordon, are also in the cast, and Gus Van Sant originally planned to make this movie in the 1990s starring Robin Williams as John Callahan.
John Callahan was a cartoonist, artist, and musician in Portland, Oregon, noted for dealing with macabre subjects and physical disabilities. His visual artistic style was simple and often rough, although still legible. It has been likened to that of William Steig, James Thurber, Richard Condie, and Ben Wicks. Callahan died on July 24, 2010, following surgery for chronic bed sores. He was 59 years old.
“Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot” opens on May 11th, but until then check out the first trailer.
