Olivia Colman Was A Queen Before

Well, here she is. Olivia Colman i mean. The English actress has been cast in the role of the elder Queen Elizabeth II for the upcoming 3rd and 4th season of the cult Netflix series- The Crown. Colman will take over the role of Queen Elizabeth right after Claire Foy left it in the second season of The Crown.

The third season of The Crown is currently in production, and will cover the period of 1964 through the early 1970s. The overhauled cast includes Tobias Menzies as the queen’s husband, Prince Philip; Helena Bonham Carter as the queen’s sister, Princess Margaret; and the recently announced Ben Daniels as Antony Armstrong-Jones, Margaret’s husband. Season 3 of The Crown will premiere in 2019, but for now you can see Colman in the first promo photo of the season.

In the queen’s fashion she’s wearing her trademark pearl necklace and drinking a cup of tea.

But did you know that Olivia Colman was queen before she became Queen Elizabeth II? Twice? Yes, that’s right.

Colman played Queen Elizabeth’s mother aka The Queen Mother in the 2012 biopic comedy Hyde Park on Hudson. The actress starred opposite Bill Murray and Laura Linney, and was extraordinary. Big part of the movie chronicled the 1939 visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Roosevelt’s country estate, Hyde Park. Samuel West played King George VI and the movie has criticized for its lack of historic accuracy.

It will be fascinating to see how Olivia plays mother and daughter in 2 different projects, don’t you think?

Which brings me to 2018. Colman is a strong Oscar contender next year, and it’s all thanks to the role Queen Anne in The Favorite. The Yorgos Lanthimos period piece has Olivia in the role of Queen Anne, and the movie will focus on close relationship between Queen Anne (Colman) and Sarah Churchill (Weisz). That relationship will be put to the test with the arrival of Sarah’s cousin, Abigail Masham (Stone),and will result in a bitter rivalry to be the Queen’s favorite.

This will be the second film collaboration of director Yorgos Lanthimos and actress Olivia Colman after The Lobster (2015), i for one can’t wait for it to hit the theaters.
