Emmy Nominations 2020: Paul And Shira Are In The Big Leagues Now

Share:

Have you seen the 2020 Emmy Nominations? You have? Good. Then let’s talk about them. More specifically let’s talk about 2 very specific nominations that I’m particularly interested in.

The outstanding actor in a limited series or a movie and the Outstanding actress in a limited series or a movie. Yup. There are some pretty heavyweights in these two categories, but among them, there are 2 rookies that have really captured my heart. Yes, i’m well aware that everyone is freaking out about Zendaya’s first Emmy nomination. And i’m all for that! Congratulations honey! But no! I’m here for two specific people that managed to get Emmy nominations on their own terms. Think about it. Unorthodox is about a topic that barely anyone cares about, while Normal People had almost no marketing. Everything was word of a mouth type of promotion. Yeah.

I’m talking of course about Paul Mescal and Shira Haas. Now, if you read my blog you know by now that I’m obsessed with two amazing TV shows. The first being Normal People and the second one being Unorthodox. I just adore them, and I think that they’re a true breath of fresh air among the usual Hollywood drama, super-hero drama and all the the other drama that occupies this award.

If you haven’t seen Normal People or Unorthodox, I urge you to do it! ASAP. You’ll love them as well, I’m sure. Why? Because both of them are adaptations of great books. Normal People by Sally Rooney and Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots by Deborah Feldman.

They’re filled with incredible acting and I just love how they’re transported to the small screen. But in the center of all this are two incredible performances that deservingly got Emmy nominations. In the Outstanding actor/actress categories of course.

However, if you take a look at these 2 distinct categories you’ll notice Paul And Shira’s rivals. The competition if you will, and there you can find some pretty big names. Huge names in fact.

Let’s start with Shira Haas. She’s nominated with:

Cate Blanchett as Phyllis Schlafly on Mrs. America

Regina King as Angela Abar / Sister Night on Watchmen

Octavia Spencer as Madam C. J. Walker on Self Made and

Kerry Washington as Mia Warren on Little Fires Everywhere

That’s three Oscar-winning actresses and TV darling by the name of Kerry Washington. But don’t think for a second that Paul is having a much easier time in his category. Why because guess who’s there?

Jeremy Irons as Adrien Veidt on Watchmen

Hugh Jackman as Dr. Frank Tassone on Bad Education

Jeremy Pope as Archie Coleman on Hollywood

Mark Ruffalo as Dominick and Thomas Birdsey

Yeaaaaah. Look, to be perfectly honest, I don’t think Paul nor Shira stand a chance of winning. No, I’m afraid Cate is the favorite with the ladies, while Mark and Hugh are the favorites in the gentlemen section. But who knows? Miracles do happen and we’ll just have to wait and see. Now, it’s not entirely clear if the actual ceremony is going to happen live at the Microsoft Theater on September 20th, or will it be a Zoom meeting ceremony. Time will tell with this awful pandemic.

But tell me… Which actress/actor/TV series or TV movie is your favorite? Who will win? Tell me in the comment section. I’d love to know.
