City of Lies: resurrecting or ending the career of Johnny Depp?

The first trailer for City of Lies is out. Yes, Johnny Depp and Forrest Whitaker lead the cast in the upcomming  biographical crime thriller film . Directed by Brad Furman, City Of Lies  is based on the book LAbyrinth by Randall Sullivan, about the murder investigations of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G.

City Of lies the story of an American hero and former LAPD detective, Russell Poole (Johnny Depp), who is working the murder cases of rappers Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. A reporter (based on journalist Randall Sullivan’s collaboration with Russell Poole), “Jack” Jackson, teams up with Poole after nearly two decades to find out the truth.

City Of Lies Is also a story about not just one, but two of the unsolved murder mysteries in the show-business. The murders of two of the most respected rappers in history. I have no doubt that City Of Lies will be at least decent, watchable film but will it be decent enough to revive and restore the career of Depp?

The actor has not had successful professional period (both personally and professionally) for quite some time now. He’s been accused of domestic violence against his ex wife Amber Heard, has had a messy and very expensive divorce, and his drunken antics has been well reported in the media.

On top of that he’s not in the best form- acting wise. Not only his image, but also his career has suffered too, and it’s been painful thing the watch to be honest. Us, Johnny’s fans have been awaiting a top-noch performance from him for so long. He’s still being offered roles in the past several years, but there is a sense of indifference and lack of focus in his acting. Like he’s given up. Like he doesn’t care anymore.

But he has 3 addition releases by the end of 2018, including the comedy drama Richard Says Goodbye and the long awaited Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Last year’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Murder on the Orient Express were not quite the box office successes that everyone hoped they would be, and don’t let me started on Alice Through the Looking Glass, Black Mass, Yoga Hosers, Mortdecai, Transcendence….

Yeah…. City Of Lies is most like the make or break film for Johnny. I truly hope he finds success once again. Whether it is a box office success or critical acclaim, I hope City of Lies will make us fall in love with Johnny all over again.
