Captain Marvel Trailer Second Viewing: It’s A Bit Underwhelming
Well, you’ve probably seen it by now.
The first official trailer for the upcoming Captain Marvel movie. The twenty-first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has an Academy Award winner in the lead role of Carol Danvers, and also has Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law, Lee Pace, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou in the supporting cast.
Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel is set to be released on March 8th 2019, but while I had a very brief chance to watch the first trailer at work, I actually had a good look at the trailer when I got home from work.
And for the life of me I can’t explain why, but the trailer felt underwhelming on the second viewing. I’m very well aware that it’s just the first trailer, and a lot of the footage remains to be shown, but I’m also second guessing the choice of actress in the lead role. Don’t kill me for this and just hear me out….
Yes, Brie Larson is one of the most talented actresses of her generation and I’m happy that she’s part of the MCU (and hey I’m also happy that she’s in the first female solo super-hero movie from MCU) but….
Somehow I don’t think she’s right for this part. This movie requires someone with a lot of charisma and she’s lacking in that part. I was also put off but the cliché lines that she was given and if you go to the Youtube comment section, you’ll notice that I’m not alone in this.
Yes, part of the comments are sexist and condescending but those who are not, are downright honest and brutal. The trailer is a letdown for me. A disappointment. It doesn’t have that Marvel feeling and if feels a bit flat in the tone, and even in the few action scenes that were shown.
I hope the next one will be so much better.
