Unpopular Opinion: I Hate It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia
Now, I’m fully aware that Hate is a strong word, but yeah… I hate it. I Hate It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. My man on the other hand (Hi Martin) loves this show, and was hyped for the recent season 13, but after agreeing to watch some of the episodes… I can honestly say I hate it.
And to be fair I watched the episodes that was named as THE BEST by fan pools and media outlets picks so they had to be great right? Wrong.
In essence I don’t get why this show is going strong for 13 Seasons! Yes THIRTEEN! And furthermore why does it has such a cult following among the fans? For starters, the humor is dark and bleak with so many even bleaker undertones.
Which just leaves the jokes to have a huge build up in each episode, and to have nothing but dark and gloomy crescendo to show for at the end. Arrested Development had a similar thing going on, but over there it was much clever and nuanced. The jokes in It’s Always Sunny also have a forced delivery that keeps annoying me every time I watch another episode, but personally for me, the characters are the main problem here.
Have I mentioned how much I despise every single one of the characters? Or „The Gang“ as they like to call themselves? Every single one of the characters is a horrible horrible human being. I’m serious. It’s hard to find a comedy series that has no redeemable or likable characters, but apparently it exists, and I’ve found it (13 seasons in). I’m especially annoyed by the twins Dennis and Deandra, and I find the character of Charlie the most tragic one of them all. I want to give this guy a big hug and say what Robin Williams said to Matt Damon… IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT.
But seriously… How is this possible to be a horrible human being and to not be in jail or a mental institution by now?
I know that there are videos upon videos of It’s Always Sunny analyses on Youtube, and the same goes for the characters, and for a good reason. Every single one of them is a crippled, damaged, alcoholic individual with sociopathic and borderline homicidal tendencies. If they were to exists in real life, I’d very much like to be kept away from me.
The plot-lines of It’s Always Sunny are overacted and moronic and on that subject… I watched an episode in which The Gang is trying to win a best bar award. It’s an allegory for the show not having won any award after years and years on air, and as far I can see… it’s true. They haven’t been nominated (or won) anything really, cause the show is not good. Yeah sure, the show’s IMDB page says they’ve won 3 Emmy awards, but for a show that’s been on air for 13 seasons that’s not that impressive. And those Emmy wins were for Outstanding Stunt Coordination for a Comedy Series or a Variety Program and not for acting, writing or directing.
So yeah, that explains a lot. Thanks for reading my rant about It’s Always sunny. I’ll stop now, and end this post by saying that even the title of the show is a fucking lie. According to Bestplaces.com, On average, there are 207 sunny days per year in Philadelphia, so this show can suck it… It’s not ALWAYS sunny in Philadelphia.
Ok.. I’ll stop now. For real… I’ll end it right here.
Ding dong your opinion is wrong
I like the show.
Ding dong, your opinion is wrong.
The characters are suppose to be bad and unlikable, you don’t have to like a character to find it funny. Because if they were good people and everything turned out bad for them that wouldn’t be funny to watch. You would constantly be upset
It is the worst show ever. There is no humor there, just sadness. Sad. Soo sad.
Thank you!
You completely miss the point of the show and do not understand it. The characters are supposed to be unlikable – the same deal as Seinfeld. As we saw with Seinfeld, you don’t need likable characters to have a hit TV show or movie. Honestly, you needing the characters of a show or movie to be likable or relateable in order for you to enjoy it makes you look extremely simple-minded and ignorant, honestly.
I can clearly tell that you’re an extremely soft and sheltered woman with delicate, fragile sensibilities – and that’s okay. You are who you are, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But dark humor is clearly not for you. You are not the sort of person that It’s Always Sunny is intended for. You are not it’s demographic.
Is this how you respond to people who don’t appreciate what you like, making personal comments and insinuations??
PS: A person like you criticizing a show like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is like hearing someone who listens only to mainstream pop music talking trash about underground heavy metal. Sure, you’re entitled to your opinion, but nobody is going to take your opinion seriously or view it as relevant.
As Chad said, “ding dong your opinion is wrong”-you are dissing the show because you missed the whole point of it; I started watching the show at eleven and even I understood then that the point was that the characters were supposed to be bad people. The humor is dark but that’s what they go for, it’s supposed to be crazy and depressing and make you hate that you love shameless, alcoholic narcissistic characters because they are all of those things.
Why must the characters be so unlikable? I know it’s part of the comedy to see horrible people do horrible things, but why not have a comedy that also has relatable characters? Come for the comedy, stay for the characters. Not come for the comedy, stay for the comedy, especially since I can get comedy literally anywhere. Also Seinfeld characters weren’t horrible people. Selfish, no doubt, but they were relatable and down to earth. Also why would you want to mock depression, Poverty, and people with mental issues? If you going to make fun of dark, depressing topics, you should at least have some optimism or likeable characters to show it’s all in good fun and not out of maliciousness. At least, South Park gives us hope for the future.
Not only that but the use of horrible characters also ruin the storytelling as well. A lot of the stories are very predictable, because you know these characters are never going to get better and you know they will never win or succeed in anything. What’s worse is when the show tricks you into thinking something new will happen. The end of Season 12, sets up a huge cliffhanger and Season 13 Episode 1 pretty much undoes any hype or intrigue. This is the kind of crap I’d expect from Family Guy! This isn’t even the first or last time they did something like this and it’s annoying as hell.
Not to mention the fact that there’s too many fucking sluts on it! Seriously, tried watching it on dvd, (my sisters dvds not mine) and couldn’t even get through the first season!
like fuck, how many sex scenes do you need to put into this crap? fucking sickening, I hate sex scenes and I hate sluts, and this show seems to be full of it! as soon as a ho sees any of the men, she’s like, oh lets fuck, even though we just met, yeah, wont that be cool of us?
no, no it’s not cool, being a drunk whore and sleeping with someone you just met is just sick, not cool, sorry ladies, but you ruined the fucking show for me, them and the writers, like jesus Christ, give it a fucking rest for a minute, okay? if you want sex and sluts, go watch porn!
fuck this show!
You are beyond fucking retarded. Go fuck your Bible elsewhere
Lmao
I love how you called the episode stupid and then just don’t mention it at all, you just go on a tangent about how they didn’t earn any real rewards, which was the point of the episode. Very though-out review, clearly.
some blatant misogyny in the comments here, yikes. for what it’s worth, i don’t think everyone has to watch the show or find it funny. people like different types of comedy and that’s fine. i disagree, though, with some of the definitive declarations in this opinion piece.
Soft disagree that they’re 100% objectively bad people. There are a handful of softer moments for each of them if you study their characters enough. However, even when they’re being horrible, I personally still find the group dynamic endearing. There is a certain pirate’s code amongst these horrible broken people and even though they don’t even seem to like each other half the time, they cling to one another like a port in a storm during this mess that is life.
Also, what is with the slut comment above? Misogyny aside, the burden of being the sexual morality police doesn’t fall on just females. Guys are perfectly capable of putting the brakes on ‘too early sex’ or whatever. The whole point is no one in the show, including the recurring side characters, has this impulse control, and we get to see the chaos that ensues.
Dude. They committed cannibalism. Also their clinging onto each other is suppose to be toxic.
You are aware that their clinging onto each other is suppose to be toxic and unhealthy right? And those handful of heartwarming moments will never justify these heinous people. They attempted cannibalism!!!
The cannibal episode was classic
I honestly cant believe all of the people dissing this writer for sharing her dislike of the show. why bother even arguing? jesus, people never cease to amaze me with their rudeness and condescending responses. Im sorry for their asinine comments.
I also very much dislike the show (hubby LOVES it). For some people, the humor simply isnt appealing.. doesnt make me wrong it just means I have a different opinion.
*Good to know Im not the only one in the world who hates this show hahaha.
AGREEEEEEE! I literally googled “who else hates ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’? » THANK YOU! But why did Jarod get so upset at your opinion? Lol
I really can’t stand the show. I grew up with and have lived around enough crazy people in my own life. I don’t have to watch fake sociopaths. Fake yelling annoys me. I grew up with plenty of angry yelling. Zero empathy or caring towards any character in this show. Despise all the characters and almost never found it funny.
Your sense of humor is the problem. Look at all the garbage shows that do win awards..modern family, this is us… shows like its always sunny are needed to counteract with all the sappy unrealistic lovey dovey bullshit on the air today. The only shows I watch religiously are its always sunny, the Eric andre show and I’ve recently started rewatching Chappelle. The best comedies cross lines. If you consider “hot tub time machine” or “the hangover” or some shitty unfunny A list comedy to be better examples of comedy than…say…”Freddy got fingered”…your sense of humor is just lacking. Sorry. Its okay not to like a show but you dislike it for bad reasons.
I love how she even watched the episode making fun of people like her (“is it the yelling?”). When they went to the bright bar with the stock sitcom characters for bartenders. I would bet my house that this critic is (or would be) a fan of How I Met Your Mother.
I understand people like this, but I’m glad I’m not one. Being too soft to enjoy Sunny means you’ll DEFINITELY never enjoy most of the greatest stand-up sets in history. If you can’t handle Dennis and Dee, stay the hell away from George Carlin.
I don’t care for this show either. I get it, they’re bad people and their bad ideas result in bad things happening. I get the dark humor, I like dark humor. I’m often the dark humor guy in my friends group. My friends have, as a result, told me I’d love It’s Always Sunny. I’m half way through season 2. I don’t care for this. It’s none of what I mentioned above. It’s the writing. I find it lazy. First and foremost the characters are nearly identical, all are capable of the same poor choices, ideas, actions. I don’t care if they’re good people or not. I’ve watched lots of shows about shitty people. I’m 37, I grew up watching shows about shitty people. Seinfeld, Married with children, even reruns of All in the Family. The problem for me is the characters on Sunny are so painfully interchangeable I have trouble caring about anything they’re saying or doing. Any episode could have any of the characters doing any of the things happening. The writing, to me, is also often forced. Comedy in general needs some kind of surprise pay off. Set your expectation and then reverse the outcome in a clever and surprising way. This show seems to simply rely on the obvious joke, over and over. We better not do that thing. Next scene they’re doing that thing! Hilarious. My only enjoyment is accurately guessing exactly what will happen next. I’m rarely wrong. I’ll finish season 2 but it’s not looking good.
Yup you are just completely wrong. About everything.
I also don’t enjoy the show and don’t find it surprising at all that fans of the show are so nasty in how they defend it. I’d be able to tolerate the show if they could calm down with the constant yelling.
Has no-one ever heard of an opinion. It’s their opinion it’s not wrong or right. It’s an opinion. Hopefully if I say it’s an opinion more times it will get through your heads. At least one person on the planet does not like something you love. You can’t change that. By the way not enjoying the show because the characters are unlikable is a normal opinion even with the intention for the characters to be unlikable. I personally love the show but I can definitely see where this reviewer is coming from. There were points in the show I was actually angry about how completely evil these people were. That’s normal.
I still love the show completely though and regard it as one of the best US comedies (this is from a person in the UK). I’ve watched, Seinfield, The Simpsons, Friends, 30 Rock, Community, Atlanta, The Good Place, The Office, Modern Family, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks & Rec and Arrested Development. It’s Always Sunny is up there with if not above all of these shows.
The show would be better if Charlie Day had zero speaking parts.
