Tarantino Star Trek movie is not a bad idea

Ok.. hear me out first. You’ve probably heard the story by now. Quentin Tarantino pitching an idea for a new Star Trek movie. Yes. According to Deadline, the two times Academy Award winner had a brilliant (top secret) idea that he pitched to Paramount, about a new Star Trek movie. He apparently plans to assemble a writing room full of Trekkies and young talented screenwriters, in order to develop a script (based on his concept) that he might eventually direct and get JJ Abrams to produce.

Quentin in currently busy with the pre-production of his Helter Skelter (working title) period piece for Sony that is set to be released in 2019. That should keep him occupied for quite some time, but besides the fact that he’s never done a movie from the SF genre, there is always room and faith in the fans (both of Star Trek and Quentin Tarantino) that he can actually do it. Yes, it’s not a bad idea if you think about it, but if you insist on the technicalities… by all means let me tell you why.

Let’s start with the obvious. Despite all the rumors, yes Tarantino is a self admitted Star Trek fan and even bigger William Shatner fan. Secondly he can write characters and direct action scenes like no other, and luckily Star Trek is a franchise that puts strong emphasis on both. He’s directed some of the finest actors in his movies, and he’s even brought out some of the finest performances of those actors. Furthermore, he’s created some of the most bad ass brilliant character in history, and i’m sure he can do that once again. But with a pre-existing characters that are pretty much well known to the general public. His directing style is stylish but gory and violence heavy but that’s just one layer of his talent that make him who he is.

Besides… Star Trek is an assemble cast of a movie in which the emphasis is put on the friendship among the characters, their co-operation, their empathy and the ability to find the thing that makes them click. Whatever it may be. And knowing Tarantino and his style, that will be done with wit, humor, and kick ass dialogue. Oh and action… Lots and lots of action.

Yes Quentin has never done a movie he didn’t wrote (or co-wrote) but there is a first time for everything. It’s not like he’ll be on uncharted territory, especially with this franchise. And maybe he’s never done a CGI heavy franchise movie, but there is a first time for that also. Hey, Taika Waititi went from directing Kiwi indies for pennies, straight to directing Thor Ragnarok. A 180 million dollar franchise movie that turned out to be one of the best action movies ever. Marvel took a big gamble with him, but it eventually paid of.

So, in conclusion… Quentin Tarantino directing a Star Trek movie is not that bad of idea. It might turn out wacky, violent and sometimes silly piece of work but you can be assured it will be unique. Kinda like Tarantino himself.
