Some Ryan Reynolds movies i actually liked (besides Deadpool)
It’s going to be Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool inspired day here at Filmsane. Yes, Reynolds is presenting the long awaited Deapool sequel this week, but i’d like to talk more about the other films in Ryan’s career. The ones that are not Deapool. And i know that I’ve previously talked about The Proposal and why i still love that movie, but i also want to mention the other notable film projects in Ryan’s C.V. You know the films that are good. Like really good. Like i actually enjoyed watching them… good.
And i know that Deadpool 2 will dominate the news, charts and the box office this week, but let’s look back at some of Ryan Reynold’s finest films… That doesn’t have the Deadpool title. Yes, i know it took him a while to bring the beloved and wacky comic book character to the big screen, but Ryan has some other decent films. Let’s look back at some of them.
Definitely Maybe (2008)
Director: Adam Brooks
Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Rachel Weisz, Abigail Breslin…
Fun fact about the movie: Ryan Reynolds’ character Will Hayes has aspirations of becoming the future President of the United States. In actuality, this can never be since Reynolds is Canadian.
Adventureland (2009)
Director: Greg Mottola
Stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds…
Fun fact about the movie: Director Greg Mottola originally planned to shoot the movie in the real Adventureland park, but later decided against it since the park had been so drastically remodeled since he had worked there.
The Proposal (2009)
Director: Anne Fletcher
Stars: Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Mary Steenburgen…
Fun fact about the movie: Sandra Bullock plays a Canadian who wants to marry her assistant (Ryan Reynolds) in order to keep her Visa status in the U.S. and avoid deportation to Canada. In real life, Reynolds is from Canada and Bullock is from the U.S.
Buried (2010)
Director: Rodrigo Cortés
Stars: Ryan Reynolds, José Luis García Pérez, Robert Paterson…
Fun fact about the movie: Ryan Reynolds states that he suffered from claustrophobia towards the end of filming (much like the character he is playing). This was mainly due to the fact the coffin he was in was gradually filled with more and more sand as filming went on. He describes the last day of shooting as “unlike anything I experienced in my life, and I never ever want to experience that again.”
Safe House (2012)
Director: Daniel Espinosa
Stars: Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Robert Patric…
Fun fact about the movie: Denzel Washington was actually waterboarded during the filming of some of the torture scene, though only for a few seconds per take.
Mississippi Grind (2015)
Directors: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck
Stars: Ben Mendelsohn, Ryan Reynolds, Yvonne Landry…
Fun fact about the movie: Mississippi Grind is loosely based on the 1974 film California Split by Robert Altman.
Life (2017)
Director: Daniel Espinosa
Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds…
Fun fact about the movie: The movie was inspired by Alien (1979).
