Solo: A Star Wars Story is great and I’m here to defend it
Well, I saw Solo: A Star Wars Story yesterday. Me and my boy had an impromptu date last night (since I was stuck with some sort of stomach fly for most of the day).
But by 5 p.m. I was feeling better and decided to go out to the movies. Solo: A Star Wars Story was on the agenda, but I must admit I was a bit apprehensive about seeing it. The entire backlash from the production, the critical reception and subsequent poor box office performance, made me hesitant to watch it, but at the end I thought… What’s the worst that could happen?
But let me warn you upfront. This is not my review. My official detailed Solo review and analysis will be posted this upcoming week, and this is merely a very brief opinion about one of the most controversial film of the summer. So, let me dive in.
Solo: A Star Wars Story is great. Don’t get fooled by the bad rep. It’s a fun movie with some awesome performances and interesting characters. OK… Let me take a different approach to this. When you Google Solo: A Star Wars Story and when you hit the film’s Wikipedia page what do you see in the description?
Solo: A Star Wars Story, or simply Solo, is a 2018 American space Western film based on the Star Wars character Han Solo. It’s exactly what is says in the description. It’s a space Western. It has heroes, and villains, smuggles and criminals, deceptive thieves and underdogs. It has great heist action scenes and twists and turns.
I wasn’t so sure in the young Alden Ehrenreich can fill the shoes of an actor like Harrison Ford, but as it turns out… He sure can. Trust me, Alden Ehrenreich has one hell of a bright future in Hollywood and don’t even get me started how great Donald Glover was in the role of Lando.
I think that the biggest mistake that this movie made, what that it came out about 6 months after Star Wars – Last Jedi. The fans were not that happy with The Last Jedi, and the negative opinions unjustifiably transferred on Solo. Sure, some Star Wars saturation and suffocation should be considered into the bad rep regarding this film, but I think that the main culprit for Solo’s underwhelming performance on the box office is The Last Jedi. However it shouldn’t be.
Yes, The Last Jedi was pessimistic, dark, morose and joyless ride, but Solo is the exact opposite. It also sets the tone for the most important 3 characters of the Star Wars universe, and even gives them a new meaning and purpose. Take Chewie for instance. For the first time Chewie is not just Han’s dog if you will. He’s a partner and an equal to the man in the title, and their shower scene was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. Yeah.. Take that haters!
So, yeah… You should definitely check out Solo- A Star Wars story. It surprised me in a positive way, and nearly blew my socks off. Solo is on thrill ride.
