Blast from the past

Mission Impossible Movies Ranked From Worst To Best

Share:

You’ve guessed it. It’s that time of the year. The Mission Impossible premiere. This time it’s Fallout and with another mission for Ethan Hunt to make his bitch. If he chose to accept it of course.

The sixth installment form the action packed franchise is going strong for 22 years now, and the same can be said for Tom Cruise in the lead role. The man doesn’t seem to age, and just keeps getting better and better. With 5 directors directing the movies (so far), Cruise seems to be the constant that keeps the celebrated franchise like glue, but much of its success is due to the fact that each of the 5 previous movies had an amazing stories, great cast and incredibly talented screenwriters and directors.

The cast of Fallout also includes Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Sean Harris, Michelle Monaghan and Alec Baldwin, all of whom reprise their roles from previous films, while Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett and Vanessa Kirby join the franchise.

Official Synopsis for Mission Impossible Fallout

When an IMF mission ends badly and Solomon Lane escapes custody, the world is faced with dire consequences. As Ethan Hunt takes it upon himself to fulfill his original briefing, the CIA begins to question his loyalty and his motives. Hunt finds himself in a race against time, hunted by assassins and former allies while trying to prevent a global catastrophe.

The Mission Impossible film franchise is one of the most commercially and critically successful franchise in the past 20, but for now let’s try and rank the previous 5 movies. Here’s my viewing of the MI movies from the worst to the best.

Mission: Impossible II (2000)

Director: John Woo
Stars: Tom Cruise, Dougray Scott, Thandie Newton…
Fun fact about the movie: Tom Cruise’s then-wife Nicole Kidman suggested Thandie Newton (Kidman’s co-star in Flirting (1991)) as the love interest for Ethan Hunt. She was cast before the script was written.

Mission: Impossible (1996)

Director: Brian De Palma
Stars: Tom Cruise, Jon Voight, Emmanuelle Béart…
Fun fact about the movie: While filming the famous scene where Tom Cruise drops from the ceiling and hovers inches above the ground, Cruise’s head kept hitting the floor until he got the idea to put coins in his shoes for balance.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

Director: Brad Bird
Stars: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg…
Fun fact about the movie: Jeremy Renner stated that working with Tom Cruise was a dream come true, since he’s always idolized him as an actor. Renner did mention Cruise is a great actor, but even more a nicer guy.

Mission: Impossible III (2006)

Director: J.J. Abrams
Stars: Tom Cruise, Michelle Monaghan, Ving Rhames…
Fun fact about the movie: After the success of Shaun of the Dead (2004), Simon Pegg was asked whether he was going to be pursuing a career in Hollywood, to which he laughed and replied “It’s not like I’m going to be in Mission: Impossible III”.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)

Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Stars: Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Jeremy Renner…
Fun fact about the movie: Ethan receives his new mission on a vinyl long-playing record. This was one of the first ways of receiving new missions from the Mission: Impossible (1966) television.
