I believe her!

You know this lady. The greatest actress living today. Yes I’m talking about Meryl Streep. Well she received her gazillionth Golden Globe nomination and she’s up for her 21st Academy Award nomination early next month.

But for now her impeccable image has been put to the test (to say the least), and was met with criticism about her alleged liaisons with the Weinstein Company. Furthermore, she was forced to publicly deny the claims that she knew about Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assaults but chose to stay silent about it.

I wasn’t deliberately silent. I didn’t know. I don’t tacitly approve of rape. I didn’t know. I don’t like young women being assaulted. I didn’t know this was happening.

“I don’t know where Harvey lives, nor has he ever been to my home.
I have never in my life been invited to his hotel room.
I have been to his office once, for a meeting with Wes Craven for “Music of the Heart” in 1998.
HW distributed movies I made with other people.
HW was not a filmmaker; he was often a producer, primarily a marketer of films made by other people- some of them great, some not great. But not every actor, actress, and director who made films that HW distributed knew he abused women, or that he raped Rose in the 90s, other women before and others after, until they told us. We did not know that women’s silence was purchased by him and his enablers.
HW needed us not to know this, because our association with him bought him credibility, an ability to lure young, aspiring women into circumstances where they would be hurt, said the actress in her lengthy statement.

Later she was part of the „She knew“ posters created by the well-known online agitator known as Sabo. A guy who’s occasionally been described as the “alt-right Banksy (according to the post in AV Club) and to which I have to say… Of course she was… Meryl has been vocal opponent of Trump, endlessly mocking him in public, and this was the perfect opportunity for the nasty idiotic Trump supporters to feast and accuse her of wrong-doing. I mean this is a woman who publicly criticized Trump and his idiotic mocking of a disabled journalist in her acceptance speech.

But I’m not going to do that. I’m here to defend her, and quite simply state that I believe her. Come on… This is a woman who donated $1 million of her salary (from The Iron Lady) to National Women’s History Museum. Now you can be sarcastic and smug and say that it was just a publicity stunt, but I don’t think it was. But let’s put that to the side. I believe he knew nothing about Harvey mostly because I believe in her.

I believe in what she said in that statement. I believe that she really didn’t knew about Harvey, and not because she deliberately stayed silent. In a time when it’s just so easy to ruin someone’s reputation why would she risk that by saying otherwise? And trust me… we now live in an age where you can find out fairly easy. Just like in the other sexual predator’s cases… someone somewhere will have heard and said something. It would have been an open secret, just like in Weinstein’s, Spacey’s or Louie CK’s case.

I chose to believe her despite the fact I have never met her or talked to her in any way. Just like I believed in Michael Jackson’s innocence regarding his accusations. And in the end why is she a target? Why because she’s a woman? Because she’s successful? Because she called Harvey a God in an acceptance speech a few years back? Lots of people did, back when he was at the top and was making them money and awards. I didn’t hear George Clooney, Matt Damon or Weinstein’s brother to say something before the scandal broke, and I think they knew waaay more than Meryl.

Sooo… Yeah I believe her. I believe Meryl knew nothing at all about this. And for fuck sake’s let her wear black at the red carpet. She’s the ally all women need. And instead tearing each other apart in these troubled times, isn’t it much wiser to stick together and be united?
