Holly Crap! Chris Pine Just Might Show Us A Decent Scottish Accent

You know this man I presume. Captain James T. Kirk, Steve Trevor and Cinderella’s Prince. Yeah. I’m talking about the gorgeous and talented Chris Pine. Well, the first trailer for Outlaw King was published today, and it’s in the genre that Chris is familiar with. Biopic. Sure, he hasn’t done that many period pieces, but he does have some biopics under his belt (Bottle Shock, The Finest Hours) and Outlaw King is scheduled for this fall.

Pine is Robert the Bruce in his second collaboration with David Mackenzie (after Hell And High Water). Robert I (as he was also known) was King of Scots from 1306 until his death in 1329. Robert was one of the most famous warriors of his generation, and eventually led Scotland during the First War of Scottish Independence against England. He fought successfully during his reign to regain Scotland’s place as an independent country and is today revered in Scotland as a national hero.

Outlaw King is actually an epic story (co-written by Mackenzie himself) about the legendary King of Scots, Robert the Bruce, and his battle to regain control of Scotland after he is declared an outlaw by the King of England for helping himself to the Scottish crown and creating civil war.

The film also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Florence Pugh, Billy Howle, Tony Curran, Stephen Dillane, James Cosmo, and Sam Spruell. James Cosmo previously starred in Braveheart, another film depicting the same period and events as this film.

But if you take a good look at the trailer you’ll notice 3 distinct things. First the gorgeous cinematography done by Barry Ackroyd. Secondly the fantastic direction by Mackenzie and lastly Chris Pine’s decent Scottish accent.

The latter is the most pleasantly surprising thing from the entire trailer. And yes, I’m very well aware that there are very few things you can actually pick up after seeing a compressed 2 and a half minutes of the film, but his accent really stands out. You don’t believe me? Scroll down under the Youtube video, and marvel at some of the compliments in the comment section. Yes, there are quite some jokes too, but I’m just glad I wasn’t the only one noticing this.

Which fills me with joy actually. Have you noticed how most of the American actors (not counting Meryl Streep) are terrible at doing accents? Keanu Reeves and Forrest Whitaker first come to mind but there are plenty more out there. Furthermore I’m also excited about the cast in this film, and it’s also one of the reasons why I’m looking forward in seeing it. The cast is composed mostly from British (and especially Scottish) actors and the director is Scottish too. So, yeah… I think I’m going to be blown away by Pine and this movie come November.

Don’t be surprised if you get blown away too.

Outlaw King will be released on Netflix and in select theaters on November 9th.
