Golden Globe Nominations: A Mixed Bag Of Legends And Newcomers
And you thought the return of Ricky Gervais in the role of host for the 77th annual Golden Globe Awards was weird. Well, wait until you see the actual nominations list my friends.
It has everything. Legends, Oscar winners and forgotten starlets. It has newcomers and rookies as well, and they all make one fantastic line up. I mean just take a good look at the Golden Globe Nominations. Cynthia Erivo shook things up in the best leading actress (in the drama category) for her performance in Harriet, and so did Renee Zellweger for her portrayal of Judy Garland. To be quite frank, I’m yet to see Judy but there’s plenty of other movies that have the label priority- so Judy will just have to wait. Movies like Bombshell, Knives Out, Richard Jewell and 1917. In fact between these two, and Scarlett, Charlize and Saorise Ronan, this will be the most tight and competitive category in the entire awards show. I don’t even have a favorite among these ladies, and I can’t really make a safe prediction on who will be crowned the winner here. This one is a tough cookie even for me.
Unless if you’re thinking of Best Supporting Actress category where Annette Benning and Kathy Bates will be fighting with Jennifer Lopez, Margot Robbie and Laura Dern for the Golden Globe award. And i think Margot will win here, but i adored Laura’s performance in Marriage Story.
The Best actress category in comedy is filled with newbie’s like Awkwafina, Ana De Armas, and Beanie Feldstein, which aaaalmost makes the legends out of focus. Almost. Legends like Emma Thompson and Cate Blanchett. They’re very much acknowledged and remembered in their category, but I’m glad that the rookies got their 5 minutes to shine as well. Antonio Banderas was a real surprise in the Best actor in a drama movie category, but I think that over there Joaquin Phoenix is the real favorite. Despite the presence of Christian Bale and Jonathan Pryce, I think that Phoenix is a shoe in for the award. He was just sooooo good in the role of the Joker, and I think that he will finally win that Oscar as well. But time will tell.
I was a little bummed out that Noah Baumbah wasn’t nominated for his directorial work in Marriage Story but hey… I was pretty satisfied with pretty much everything the other categories. Chernobyl and Fleabag are kicking ass in the TV portion of the nominations, and my girl Natasha Lyonne even managed to score a nomination for Russian Doll. Brilliant am I right?
The 77th Golden Globe Awards will be awarded on January 5th 2020.
But what are your favorites? What are your thoughts on today’s Golden Globes nominations. Which movies and performances you loved the best?
