Dark Phoenix Trailer Second Viewing: A Bit Flat And Unimaginative
Well, you’ve probably seen it. The first official trailer for latest installment of the X-Men franchise.
Dark Phoenix is the name and as expected Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) will have a central role in it. After all she’s The Dark Phoenix. After the extensive reshoot and re-writes of the script that plagued the production and post production for months and months now, 20th Century Fox did the only logical thing and pushed the release for February 2019.
And as you’ve probably seen the new addition to the cast is Jessica Chastain as a mysterious extraterrestrial shapeshifter who manipulates Jean Grey, in hopes of using the Phoenix as a weapon.
I viewed the trailer for the first time while I was on my lunch break, and for an additional second time when I got home, and just like with the trailer for X-Men Apocalypse, it felt cheep and emotion-less. A bit flat and unimaginative don’t you think? Like they’ve given up and thrown in the towel. I can even anticipate most of effort coming from the older cast-members (Fassbender, McAvoy and Chastain) but I also have even some beef with the choice of music.
Really? The Dors again? How many times this song has been used before? I understand that there is some significance to this song and Dark Phoenix, since it’s a third and last movie in a trilogy, but come on… Surely there were some better and original choices that this?
Besides writing the script for Dark Phoenix, Simon Kinberg is directing for the first time in his career, also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Evan Peters, Tye Sheridan, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Alexandra Shipp, and Jessica Chastain.
But before I end this post, let me just point to something I’ve noticed while researching for this movie. The title. All of the X-Men movies (not from the X-Men universe) had the words X-Men in the title. Like I said.. Not counting The Wolverine, Deadpool, Logan… Why is Dark Phoenix different? Are they turning this movie in an impromptu solo movie or is 20th century fox afraid to put the X-Men in the title?
Yes, Wikipedia states that Dark Phoenix will be released in some countries as X-Men: Dark Phoenix, but Dark Phoenix is the title on IMDB and pretty much everywhere else.
Check it out.
