Can Rafal Zawierucha Become The New Christoph Waltz?

You’ve probably heard the news. Quentin Tarantino cast the Polish actor Rafal Zawierucha in the role of Roman Polanski for his upcoming period piece mystery/crime drama called Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

Rafal Zawierucha is entering an A-list cast of Oscar winners and nominees, but also bankable movie stars that are the best of the best that Hollywood can offer. Leo DiCpario, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Burt Reynolds, Damian Lewis, Dakota Fanning, Al Pachino, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Kurt Russell, Timothy Olyphant, James Marsden and Lena Dunham just to name a few.

No pressure there right?

But as the production of Once Upon A Time is happening in Los Angeles, the news of the casting of Roman Polanski were focused not so much on the famed Polish director, but to the actor that will be playing him on the big screen.

Rafal Zawierucha. He’s Polish just like Polanski and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood will be not just the first big budget production for the young actor, but the first English speaking role outside his native Poland.

The plot of the story will be partly inspired by the Charles Manson ordered murders of Sharon Tate and several other people in August 1969. Sharon Tate- the then wife of Roman Polanski was murdered by Manson’s followers along with her unborn baby.

And there is a physical similarity between Rafal Zawierucha and Polanski, the actor is 5 years younger than the Oscar winning director (at the time of the Tate murders) and unlike Christoph’s characters in the 2 previous Tarantino movies, Rafal is playing a real life character and the one who is still living i might add. Yeah… No pressure.

But that doesn’t matter all that much to be honest. What I’m more concerned is Tarantino’s ability to choose unknown (well to the general public at least) actors and make them into the next Christoph Waltz. His ability to find good actors and make them better. Oscar worthy and in demand (world-wide) not just in their native countries.

Yes, Christoph Waltz is the prime example of than but you must remember that Tarantino has the ability to choose other foreign actors/actresses and make them into first class material. Mélanie Laurent for instance. But in Rafal’s case I do hope Once Upon A Time In Hollywood becomes something more than a jumping start for a more illustrious and renowned career.

I hope he becomes the next big Tarantino’s discovery. I hope he outshines those big A-listers in the roster and makes the audience and the critics say Brad who? I hope he mentions Tarantino in his acceptance speech and I hope that he becomes the news Christoph Waltz. No, I hope Rafal Zawierucha becomes better than him.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood hits theaters July 26, 2019.
